Good Morning,
I have really enjoyed speaking to you all over the phone
this week. Here are a few key points we talked about which may help families navigate
through this roller-coaster of a time period that we are currently experiencing.
- Try and keep to a routine. Children often thrive on routine and although we are experiencing something entirely new children need to hold on to whatever normality they can. This includes regular bedtimes and mealtimes where possible. Plus time each day for exercise, playtime and learning time.
- Don’t expect your child to sit and learn at a table for longer than 15-20 minutes. At school we teach 3-5 20 minute sessions throughout the day. The rest of the time the children are learning through play.
- Pinterest is great for engaging, practical ideas for how you can teach through play. Try searching for ‘EYFS activities (Early Years Foundation Stage)’.
- Children will learn lots of valuable life skills while at home during this time. Encourage them to help out around the house; tidying their room and their toys, helping to make a meal or set the table.
- The ‘Oxford Owl’ website is great for helping your child to read age appropriate ebooks. You will have to sign up but it’s free. ‘Phonics Play’ and ‘Topmarks’ are also great websites for interactive phonics and maths games that the children will have played at school.
- Children can learn a lot through play but so can you. Children at this age will often express their feelings and emotions through play. Let them lead you in to their world of imaginative play. They may play out scenarios of the current situation we are in which will help them process any difficulties they are having.
As always, if you need help with anything please get in
touch with the school email or contact me at purpleclass@beighton.sheffield.sch.uk.
If you missed my call, don’t worry I will try again on Thursday morning. Thank
you, Miss Hannon
