Blubber Experiment

In our Topic lessons we have been learning about animals that live in Polar Water! We learnt all about how they are adapted to live there. We found out that one of their adaptations is that they have a layer of blubber under their skin. We decided to conduct an experiment to see how the blubber helps them!

First we dipped our hand into icy cold water for 3 seconds. We then put our other hand in, but this one was protected by a layer of blubber. We found that the hand that was protected by the blubber didn't get cold in the icy water compared to our bare hand!

We concluded that the layer of blubber keeps the animals warm, even in the freezing cold Arctic Ocean! Can you tell your adult which animals you found out have a layer of blubber under their skin? Can you find out if any other animals have blubber too?

Partitioning

This week we are going to be partitioning numbers in different ways. We will be recognising how 22 can be partitioned into 20 and 2, 10 and 12 and even 15 and 7!

Can you try this at home?

How can you partition 35, 42 and 16?

Planting

In Purple Class we have been planting beans and sunflowers. We have also learnt about what plants need to grow and the different parts of a plant including the leaves, flower, roots, and stem.

Fabulous fruit kebabs

On Thursday we went to the dinner hall and made healthy fruit kebabs. First we had to wash our hands and the fruit so that they didn't have any bacteria on them. Next some of us got chosen to chop the fruit into pieces, but not before we had peeled the bananas! After that we chose the fruit we wanted to put on the kebabs. We could choose from pears, apples, bananas, grapes, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. We all wanted to finally eat them but first Miss Stanley had to take a photo of them first.

"They were delicious and juicy" - Reece
"We enjoyed them very much and wanted to have more but we couldn't" - Thomas
"They were so so nice and all of the fruits were lovely" - Harlow
" They were so so nice that the fruit was nearly all gone!" - Rebecca
"The bananas were really slippery when we put them on the skewers" - Emily W

Fruit Kebabs!

What a great start to our new topic we have had! We now know about the different food groups and which foods we should eat often to stay healthy. We realised that fruit contains lots of vitamins and minerals so we decided that a fruit kebab would be the perfect healthy snack! We designed our own in our topic books and yesterday we made them. Can you see how excited we were? The final product tasted delicious!
