Recorders

This half term we are lucky enough to have Kate in Red Class teaching us how to play the recorder. We learnt how to hold the recorder and we learnt that you only have to blow gently for it to make a soft sound. We now know that you have to hold it at the top with your left hand and use your right hand to steady it at the bottom. Here are some pictures of us enjoying our Music lesson! We can't wait for next week already!

Marvelous Maths

This week in maths we have been learning all about place value for numbers up to 50.

We have been working practically using deans and straws to represent how many tens and ones are in a number.

We are so proud of our learning.

World Map

In Geography we have been learning about the 7 continents and the 5 oceans.

We have looked at maps and atlases to locate the continents and we found out that we live in Europe.

We also found out that the ocean that surrounds the United Kingdom is the Atlantic Ocean.

We used directional language such as North, East, South and West.

Nursery Phonics Workshop

Today we held a phonics parent workshop to show how we teach phonics in Nursery.  Our parents/ carers joined in with a phonics session where they found out how we learn the sound of the week and they also got to meet Fred Frog who taught us all how to speak in Fred talk.  We played I-spy with Fred and then our parents and carers could come and play with us in a variety of phonics linked activities. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came today. If you could not attend please feel free to come and speak to a member of Nursery and we will happily go through some of the things that were talked about.

A big hello from Mrs Lockhart.

Well, what a wonderful start to the year I've had with Yellow Class! I can't believe we are almost at the end of week 3. I thought it would be nice to introduce myself a little to you all. So here goes........

Originally from Cardiff, Wales, in 1998 I ventured 'Up North' to Sheffield to study Primary Education at Sheffield Hallam Uni. Since then I have taught in numerous schools in London, Cardiff, Sheffield and Derbyshire. I have experience teaching Foundation stage, right through to Year 6. I have 2 children of my own, Evie 12 and  Dylan 10, who I'm sure you'll get to hear about through your children. My passions are spending time with my children, music, playing tennis, relaxing at the cinema and I have to admit I'm a bit of a foodie.

I am passionate about making learning fun and engaging for all your children and will do my very best to help them to be the very best they can be. I want them all to reach their full potential but also  help them to develop into kind, caring and wonderful individuals.

As a parent myself, I am fully aware of the challenges that school and learning can bring. Please don't hesitate to come and chat to me about any concerns, worries, questions you may have about your child and life in Yellow Class. I am more than happy to chat things through with you.

I'm extremely excited for the year ahead and all the adventures that await Yellow Class!

Fractions

This week in maths we have started looking at fractions. We have learnt about halves and quarters of shapes and of amounts.

We have been using a fraction bar to help us find fractions of amounts by sharing.

Can you find half of 18, 24 and 30?
Can you find a quarter of 24, 32 and 28?

PE

In PE we have been lucky enough to have James from Sheffield United helping us improve our skills in athletics. This week we were practising our throwing skills. We had a go at the javelin, shot put and the discus.

We also have a go at running the daily mile as part of our warm up and we're always aiming to improve our personal best!

Marvellous Medicine

We started to write our own Marvellous Medicine stories and have been discussing what ingredients we would use.....

We think Grandma needs to be beautiful so will need the petals of flowers in her medicine.

What would you use in your medicine to make Grandma a nicer person?

Athletics

We are loving learning different skills for Atheletics in PE. Yesterday we practised throwing the javelin, shot put and discus. It was so much fun and we are trying to improve our personal best each week.

Noah's Ark

This week in Religious Education (RE) we read our second Christian moral story, Noah's Ark.

First we created our own stick puppets.

Then we used vocabulary mats to help us re-tell the story.

At the end of the lesson we compared Noah's Ark to The Feeding of the 5000 and thought about the meaning of each story.

Next lesson we will be focusing on an Islamic moral story.

Planting Beans

Last week in Blue Class we carried out a test in our Science lesson.

We are investigating what a plant needs in order to grow.

We planted our beans in jam, sand, coffee and cotton wool.

We are going to observe the growth of beans over a period of two weeks and then examine the different parts of a plant.

We love the library!

We love visiting the library each week and enjoy choosing a new book to take home and share. This week I was so proud of Red Class as lots of the children really wanted to tidy the library and make sure it was looking it's best after they had chosen a book. We wanted everybody else to enjoy it as much as we do!

Well done Red Class!

Celebrating Differences Week

This week is the Family of Schools Awareness week. The chosen theme has been 'Celebrating Differences'.  We started off with an assembly where Miss Challoner had a large suitcase with something very special and important inside it.  The children attempted to guess what it could be, and it turned out to be a mirror showing the children that it is us who are very important and special.   The children were reminded about how we are all different and unique and that we should celebrate this.

In Nursery the children looked at their unique finger prints by creating ink finger print pictures. They explored differences through playing the swapping places game and then  talked in circle time about what makes them special.

Time!

In maths this week we have been learning all about time. We have sequenced different events in our day and used vocabulary related to time.

We have learnt about seconds, minutes and hours and we can now tell the time to o'clock and half past.

Can you use your time skills to tell the time to o'clock and half past at home?

Spelling!

We have been learning the words we will need to use to re-tell The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch from the view of Mrs Grinling. We have taken part in some really fun spelling activities to practice learning how to spell the words. These would also be really fun to do at home!

We are special!

We are all very special and yesterday we discussed what makes us unique! We have so many talents in our class and it is really important for us to share them each other!

Grouchy Grandma

This week we have been writing noun phrases about Grandma. We decided that noun phrases were description around the noun. Here with have chosen two adjectives to go before the noun. These will help us with our character descriptions.

Circus Entertainer

Today we had a visit from a Green top Circus Entertainer as part of our prize for being one of the winning schools in the 10 day Active Travel Challenge in October.  We met before school at St. Mary's Church where we were all very entertained.  We then all walked to school together and children in school saw more tricks get performed during their assembly.  It was a fun and fabulous way to kick start our week and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.
