Resources for Mental Health Awareness Week

 Parents & Carers

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week.  This is an area we constantly give lots of attention to in school (in an age appropriate way), particularly over the course of the pandemic.

Below links to a nice resource with some suggested activities that you and your child may like to do together at home.

The theme for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week is nature.

Mini-beast Hunt

We have been exploring our Nursery yard to find mini beasts. We found lots of them: ants, spiders, woodlice, worms and slugs.

Germination of cress

Last week in science we planted cress seeds in different conditions. Today we have been observing the results and asking questions about them.

The children were very surprised and intrigued that both the seeds which had been planted on breakfast cereal and those that had been kept in the dark had grown!

Plants!

This half term we are learning all about plants! We have been re-capping our Y1 knowledge of the parts of a plant and we have also started an experiment to see what conditions plants need in order to grow the best. We are really enjoying it! At the end of the half term we will be writing some advice for others on how to look after a garden. Could you find out what plants you have at home? Maybe you could draw your plant and explain how you look after it?

Pops and Sledge teach us Castle Defence!

We have been learning about medieval castles for the past two weeks in year 1. First we learnt about the different parts of a medieval castle.

Next we learnt about the different jobs that you could have in a castle and there was so many to choose from! We had to think carefully about which job we would be really good at and apply for it. The vocabulary that some of the children used was fantastic - security, hardworking and trustworthy.

Then the medieval queen paid us a visit and interviewed us! She was so happy with our applications that we all got hired. Congratulations Red Class!

Finally we had a special visit from Pops and Sledge who showed us how to defend our castle. They split us in to two groups, the Normans and the Saxons and we fought against each other. It was so much fun and we all learnt some new skills!

Healthy Minds Champions

This year we have been involved in the Sheffield Healthy Minds Project.  Part of this project involves recruiting a team of 'Healthy Minds Champions' to work together to find ways to improve the support for emotional well-being across school.

We asked for children to send in their application, explaining why they were interested in becoming a Healthy Mind Champion.  We were so impressed with the creative videos, songs, posters and poems, where children explained how they would help others keep a healthy mind and stay happy and positive.

Due to so many applications from children so keen to help others we had to go to an election process.  Children voted for the classmate that impressed them the most.

Here are the children that received the most votes to make up our team of Beighton Healthy Minds Champions.

Amazing Archery

Today we have been lucky enough to have an archery workshop delivered by the amazing Pops Outdoor Adventure team. The children learnt how to fire arrows at targets, shoot arrows over different distances as well as playing a variety of fun games. We were also given lots of information about how castles were defended by their archers. We all had lots of fun and a great day was had by all!
