Andy Goldsworthy Art

This week we have begun learning about Andy Goldsworthy. He is a sculptor and photographer who creates artwork using only natural resources. We admired his different creations and then had a go at some of our own art work in the same style in forest school.

The Great Kapok Tree

We have been reading the story of The Great Kapok Tree which is about a man in the rainforest  who wants to cut down the trees but the animals persuade him why it is important to save them.
We are writing our own setting description this week to describe the Amazon rainforest.

Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is an artist and an environmentalist. He makes sculptures out of nature and natural materials. He also takes photographs of art in nature. We have been in Forest School making different patterns with leaves, stones, sticks and bark.

Measuring in Maths!

This week in maths we have been measuring length and height. We have been using non-standard and standard units on measure.

First we measured objects around the classroom using non standard units of measure.

Then we moved onto using a ruler and measuring in cm. We also put strips of paper in order from the shortest to the longest.

Can you use a ruler at home to measure the length of different objects in you house?

Measuring

In Maths this week we are learning about measurement. We have had a go at using objects to measure ourselves and things around the classroom. It was so much fun! We had to make sure there were no gaps and that our measuring was straight. We also checked it started at one end of the object and finished exactly at the other end. Tomorrow we are moving on to using rulers.

Recipe Writing!

Over the last couple of days we have been presenting our amazing recipe writing. The children have been taking their time, holding their pencils properly and sitting smartly on their chair to ensure that their writing is the best it can be! Here are a few examples of our work! We hope you enjoyed your biscuits.

Library Visit

In Orange Class we love our weekly visit to the library! This week we enjoyed sharing different types of books with each other including non-fiction books and some poetry.

Which book did you take home to enjoy over the holidays?

Counting!

In maths this week we have been counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. We have been using our knowledge to solve repeated addition calculations and problems.

We have used numicon to create our own number lines to help us. We wrote on the tables (don't tell Mrs Reid) to input the numbers.

Can you practice counting in 2's, 5's and 10's at home?

Our Fantastic Trip

I have to say I was incredibly proud of Turquoise Class on Friday. Their behaviour was absolutely outstanding at every point in the day and many members of the public remarked on their manners. We loved spending time in the Winter Gardens sketching and truly impressed Graves Gallery with our portrait skills. Thank you again for supporting us in our learning.

Baking Iced Sea Biscuits

This week in Green Class we have been making 'Iced Sea Biscuits' for Mr Grinling.

We followed a recipe in order to make the biscuits and then we decorated them. We will be writing our own recipes next week.

Baking Iced Sea Biscuits

This week we made Iced Sea Biscuits as part of our learning about The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. We are going to be writing a recipe in the coming week. The children are able to discuss what they did, they know that we use command sentences in a recipe and they also know the features of a recipe e.g. ingredients and method.

When we made the biscuits we listened really well and followed instructions.

Our Marvellous Medicine

This morning we have made our marvellous medicines! We chose four ingredients and mixed them altogether. Next week we are going to write instructions so that we can make them again.
